Carpe vino – Seize the wine!

I like wine. Wait, that’s an understatement… I LOVE wine. A lot. More than most people. I drink it, I cook with it, I enjoy it.

One problem though… I do not have what other wine experts (some snooty wine snobs amongst them) might call proper wine knowledge. I know that I like Merlot, but that certain Shiraz’s don’t go down that well. I prefer red, but I also enjoy slightly dry white  and the occasional *gasp* glass of sweet rose. Some cheaper wines are in my opinion stacks better than the very expensive varieties. So what if I enjoy them? My wine drinking has got nothing to do with being fashionable or any of the other things a lot of other non-wine -lovers-but-wine-drinkers-because-they-think-it-makes-them-cool think it portrays.

I do not like wine snobs laughing at me when I ask silly questions about wine, but how am I supposed to learn?

I think I do however need to attend a proper wine course… any suggestions on good ones to go to?

Cheers! *clink*

Wisdom comes with age and so does gray hair

I discovered my first ever gray hair this morning! And that at the ripe old age of 30!

To make me feel even older, a friend just emailed me a list of “Things that make you feel old”. It made me want to cry…

Pffft! Not really! I am not scared of getting older. With age come wisdom and in most (well hopefully most) cases maturity.

How many of these things makes you feel old?

1. Windows XP was released TEN years ago, in 2001. (What?! Already?!)

2. The “new” Millennium is more than a decade old. (Feels like the Y2K buzz happened only yesterday)

3. Pierce Brosnan last acted as James Bond 9 years ago. (He was one of my favourite Bonds)

4.  It’s been 10 years since 9/11 (Which means it’s been 10 years since I’ve been overseas. Took my first international trip to England two days after 9/11. Feels like yesterday though)

5. The Matrix came out 12 years ago, Keanu Reeves is 46 today. (And not so hot anymore in my opinion)

6. Mother Theresa and Lady Diana have been dead for 14 years. (Hectic!)

7. Macaulay Culkin is 30 today. “Home Alone” came out over 20 years ago. (He’s my age, wow!)

8. Terminator 2 is 20 years old. Edward Furlong who portrayed kid John Connor is 33 now. (He was a creepy kid and is now a creepy grownup)

9. Sean Connery is 80 years old and retired. (Bless his pensioner socks)

10. The youngest Spice Girl is 35, the oldest Backstreet Boy 39, Gwen Stefani is 41, Madonna 52 (And in 30 years they will all be geriatrics!)

11. The first Harry Potter book came out 14 years ago! (And what a phenomenon it’s been)

12. The first season of F.R.I.E.N.D.S was aired 17 years ago! (I can’t imagine my teenage years without my F.R.I.E.N.D.S)

13. ‘Kids’ born in 1993 can legally drive, drink and vote this year. (We have a “kid” at the office who was born in 1991. Now that makes me feel old!)

14. Jurassic Park is older than Justin Bieber. (Jip,  he definitely needs a few more years to go before his you know what drops and he becomes a man!)

15. Bryan Adams’ cult song “Summer of 69″ was released 26 years ago. (Now that’s just sad – I have friends that age!)

16. Kids whom you remember in their diapers posting their pics on Facebook. (Case in point, my 18 year old cousin whom I used to babysit. Really can’t believe how quickly she grew up)

17. Facebook has been around for 7 years. (Only 7? Feels like ages!)

So which of the above wants to make you cry?

Be gone evil enticement!

Do not lead me into temptation, I can find it myself, or rather, it usually finds me.

Behold! The object of my temptation this morning…

One of our intern’s mom’s sent a lovely cake to the office for the staff to share. I am on this mission to be a lot healthier and to watch what I eat so lovely little gestures like this tend to derail me… eh, slightly.

However, I have been standing strong. I decided to ignore this evil abomination and to stick to my apple and yogurt.

It’s not fun doing the right thing some times. Pffft!

Facebook status gripe

An article I read this morning got me thinking and I just love it when I get the opportunity to churn out the build up of irritation on certain matters under the guise of ‘opinion’.  So here goes… had an article about the “7 Stupidest mistakes we keep seeing on Facebook”.

Their list is however way too short!

I’d like to include the 7 stupidest types of updates we keep seeing on Facebook to that list.

1.       Over sharing – it’s just not cricket!

Telling everyone on your status that you have had the runs for three days straight and that it is coming out on both ends is just disturbing! Same thing applies to explicitly sharing who you did what with the night before. We do not want to know about your bowel movements or sexual activities. Keep it to yourself!

2.       Washing your dirty laundry for all to see

So you had a fight with your partner.  We all have fights with our other halves from time to time. But seriously, it is none of our business and we don’t need to know every sordid little detail of what a scumbag/bitch/choose your own adjective here, your partner seems to be. This is not kindergarten. We do not want to know the “he said, she said”. If I want drama, I will follow one of the soap operas on television.

3.       I have a secret nah nah nah nah nah!

Acting as if you have this great big secret that you just might share with the world if we are lucky, completely rubs me up the wrong way. For example, “I can’t believe that just happened”. Of course, the person responsible for the post sits in anticipation for someone to ask, “Gee Bob, what happened?” Blegh! It’s so annoying!

4.       Hypochondriacs are us

These are the attention seekers of the world. They are always struggling with some or other ailment and the ailment is the only thing that they will ever posts updates about. They are never just happy and they never have anything other to say other than how miserable they are feeling, how bad this or that ache is etc, etc… I know it is not nice being sick, having back ache or any other ailment, but reminding us constantly about how bad you are suffering is just exasperating

5.       I am so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There seems to be a lot of people on Facebook that suffers from over excitement. It’s either that or they clearly do not know how to use exclamation marks properly.

I think it is ridiculous!!!!!!!!!

Now look at what they’ve made me do! I got all excited for no apparent reason. Silly sods.

6.       Facebook, do you read me?

Some Facebook users tend to spam others’ news feeds by doing one update after another in a very short span of time. I once saw a guy doing 13 updates in less than 10 minutes about absolute rubbish. Needless to say, I promptly removed him from my friends list.

7.       Copy paste if you feel the same

“If your mom/dad/wife/husband/child is the best mom/dad/wife/husband/child ever, copy and paste this as your update”. I do not mean to be insensitive, but what do these updates actually achieve? It also seems to be the same people who copy and paste every possible status out there. Here’s a thought… post something original!

I’d like to add one… If you enjoy copying and pasting updates, copy and paste this update as your update. Keep it there for at least an hour and then copy and update this update again.

How do you like them apples?

That concludes my rant for the day. Facebook friends, beware, I will be watching your updates very closely!

To (ch)eat or not to (ch)eat?

I am trying to lose weight. It’s an ongoing struggle. I am sure that you can ask anyone who’s been on a diet that you can lose a lot of weight by sticking to a very strict diet, but it will mostly be water weight … from crying!

I don’t like dieting. I think diets seldom work. To lose weight you must make a conscious effort to eat healthy, avoid sugar and fat, drink lots of water and exercise. Now we all know that is what we need to do on a daily basis, yet it is the most difficult thing to do.

I have been doing all of the above for most of last week, but the weekend has been a little more difficult. Last night we had waffles and ice-cream for dinner. Oh the shame!

I ended up giving most of my waffles and ice cream to the hubby who I didn’t hear complaining about the extra helping, so it wasn’t all that bad. Calories shared are less harm full after all. Not so? Well that’s my theory and I am sticking to it!

This morning in the office however… #EPICfail! Our newly elected office president brought the most delicious looking cupcakes which his girlfriend baked last night. I was good and only stuck to having one…

Ok, fine, that’s a lie, I had two! Pffft!

I envy people who have naturally fast metabolisms. They should bottle whatever causes it and sell it – they will be sure to make a killing!

So until that happens, I will stick to my regime of eating lots of fruits and veggies, drinking lots of water and exercising every day. Yeah right, who am I kidding?!

Oh lordy… *Groan*

Apparently, I have a SAD

Normally, I love winter. Heck, I’m usually one of its biggest fans. I love having to put on layers of clothing to hide those niggling few extra rolls and I love sitting in front of a fire place with a lovely glass of red wine or just snuggling up to my hubby.

But this year’s winter has been seriously cold and long! I am getting slightly depressed, irritated and impatient with my favourite season now.

I need summer!

Apparently there is something called seasonal affective disorder or SAD (how appropriate). It is a type of depression that usually occurs in winter months or rainy seasons and it can sap your energy and make you feel moody.  It appears that symptoms of SAD may include difficulty waking up in the morning, a tendency to over sleep, a tendency to overeat and a nagging craving for carbohydrates and sugar, which may lead to weight gain.

Wait a minute, what do you mean it is a disorder? That’s me on a daily basis! 😉

On a different note, my ‘get me connected’ campaign which I wrote about earlier this week has lost a bit of steam. I gained 14 new followers since Monday on Twitter, but I still need more! So if you have not followed me yet, do so now @NoeleneMostert! Go on, you know you want to…

So far it’s working!

On Monday I wrote about my plan to increase my social rank by gaining more Twitter followers. So far, it seems to be working, albeit very, very slowly…I’ve gained only a few more followers and my own deadline of doubling followers by Friday is looming.

Interestingly enough, I gained three followers of very high standing in our industry, so I am actually not doing that bad. 🙂 But I need more, much, much more!

So please, if you are not following me yet, do so now!@NoeleneMostert. It’s that easy! 🙂
